Temperament

Bonding

Korat cats have a unique temperament.  They demand attention and want to be with their bonded person or people at all times.  Korats are the kind of cats who will “help” you with everything you are doing.  They are vocal when they want to be.  Each cat has its own unique vocal pattern but rest assured, you will know when a Korat wants something.  The trick is trying to figure out what they want.  Also, Korats require specialized training.  If you are firm and consistent with undesired behavior, a Korat will understand and become full members of the family.  If you teach them that no means no, then they will respect and comply (most of the time).  If you teach them that no means maybe, then they will keep pushing until they get their way.

Curious and opinionated, these cats carry themselves with the grace and dignity of royalty. The Korat is considered to have heightened senses and a very attentive nature. In a Korat you will have a friend for life, all for a little play once a day.

Korats are a special breed and a relationship with them must be maintained to form a bond between pet and owner. Like anyone, if left neglected, they may become resentful and show extreme behavior. If a modest degree of attention is provided, along with proper rules, the Korat will become a dedicated and loyal companion.

When you first meet a Korat cat make sure to make eye contact with them.  It doesn't matter if they are a baby kitten or a veteran Korat, this is the most important type of communication for introduction to a Korat.  Once your eyes meet, keep the Korat's gaze as long as they keep eye contact with you while gently blinking to show you are being friendly.  The Korat will most likely gently blink back.  Korats are cautious when meeting new people and animals because they are a naturally occurring breed.  If you are very lucky, the first time you meet a Korat they will hold your gaze for an extended period with gentle blinks.  Korats have unique cues to bond with those they choose.  They share eyes with you to let you know that they have affection for you.

Special Care

These cats can never be declawed (Onychectomy). The sensitivity of the breed requires that they be provided with appropriate materials for grooming, (scratching post). Like any other cat, the Korat enjoys the outdoors; however, never allow them to go outside unless closely supervised.  Their claws must be clipped regularly, preferably weekly.
